A Conversation With my Mother, video installation, France, 2014.

As its title suggests, this video is a conversation with the artist’s mother, while playing a backgammon game. Discussion snaps towards the end of the second half when her mother began to recount her life’s displacements from Damascus, her hometown, to Aleppo, then Riyadh, before getting married and settling in Lebanon. Each of these travels is a story about the political upheavals and their impact on daily life. It deals with different concepts that relate to exile and journeys while having a fairly nuanced view of the Middle East - that can be traced back to the Nasserist years. Memories and anecdotes mingle her incomprehension and confusion of a socio-political situation that was imposed on the population.
